Manchester United suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat in the Champions League against Como, leaving manager Michael Carrick under fire for his tactical decisions and future with the club. This loss marks another tough night for the team, with captain Bruno Fernandes openly questioning the coaching staff’s strategy, which has sparked speculation about the team’s direction.
The match started poorly for United, as Como’s Nico Paz scored just two minutes in. The Italian side added three more goals, with Paz netting a second, making it a disheartening evening for the visitors. Joshua Zirkzee managed to score a late goal for United, but it was too little too late.
In his post-match interview, Fernandes expressed frustration over the team’s pressing strategy, suggesting that failing to apply pressure allowed Como to gain confidence. “It’s up to the coaching staff to decide how we play. Sometimes, if you give too much time to the opposition, they can exploit that,” he told TNT Sports.
This latest loss followed a similar situation after their previous Champions League game, where Lisandro Martinez questioned the club’s summer transfers after a defeat to Atletico Madrid. Martinez later issued an apology after discussions with club management.
When asked about Fernandes’ comments, Carrick focused on the players, emphasizing that regardless of tactics, success requires effort and hard work. “Whatever system you play, if the players don’t put in the effort, it won’t work,” he stated.
Carrick now finds himself under increased scrutiny, as United’s winless streak has stretched to seven matches across all competitions. Despite leading the team to the Champions League last season and earning a two-year contract as a reward, this season’s results have been disappointing.
After the loss, Carrick acknowledged the disappointment and took responsibility for the team’s performance. “I’ll own up to it. Everyone needs to take responsibility, and I’m fine with that,” he explained. He also apologized to the away supporters, whose journey to watch the match was not reflected in the team’s performance.
When asked if he was concerned about his job security, Carrick responded that he hadn’t focused on that and was more concerned about the disappointment felt by the fans.
United currently sits in 13th place in the Premier League and faces Bournemouth at home this Sunday. The team needs a swift turnaround to lift the pressure off Carrick and restore their season.
