Tragic Week in Italy’s Mountains: Avalanches Claim Lives of Skiers and Hikers

Italian rescuers reported on Monday that at least a dozen lives were lost over the past week due to avalanches and unstable mountain conditions. The total count of fatalities stands at 13, with 11 victims identified as having perished in avalanches on treacherous unmarked slopes.

This unfortunate news comes just as the Winter Olympics kicked off in the Lombardy region, close to the Swiss border. Officials assured the public that Olympic venues in Lombardy, along with Cortina d’Ampezzo and Val di Fiemme, are under constant watch and are safe for visitors.

The national mountain rescue team explained that the deadly avalanches were caused by weak layers of fresh snow. These weak spots made it possible for just one person to trigger an avalanche.

The National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps noted that the unstable snow layers can be hard to detect, even for skilled experts. About this, spokesperson Federico Catania remarked that recent snowfalls have attracted many visitors to the slopes, leading to an increase in accidents and fatalities.

In a tragic incident over the weekend in Alpe Meriggio, two individuals died, and one was seriously injured due to an avalanche, which also buried at least one of the victims. Reports indicate that additional fatalities occurred in Trentino and South Tyrol, with separate incidents near the Marmolada glacier and along the Apennine range.

According to Catania, those skiing in controlled and managed areas should not encounter significant dangers. He emphasized, “There is no danger for anyone skiing within managed ski resorts, especially at Olympic venues.”

With the start of both the Winter Olympics and the increased visitor traffic, Italy’s fire department has assured that safety measures are in place to protect everyone involved. They are prepared to support athletes and the public throughout the games.

Safety Measures for the Winter Olympics

Preparations by the Italian National Fire Brigade are aimed at ensuring the well-being of athletes, spectators, and residents during the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Games, focusing on maintaining regular safety services alongside enhanced rescue operations.
