Trump Warns of Military Action Over Diego Garcia Base
Former President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning regarding the future of the Diego Garcia air base in the Chagos Islands. He stated that military force might be necessary to protect this U.S.-U.K. installation if any deal threatens access to it.
In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump displayed a willingness to move forward from prior tensions with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, describing their discussions about the air base as “very productive.” He underscored the strategic significance of Diego Garcia, suggesting it plays a crucial role in U.S. national security.
Trump addressed the recent U.K. deal concerning the islands, which involves transferring sovereignty to Mauritius while leasing Diego Garcia back for at least 99 years. He mentioned that while the deal might be the best option for the U.K., he would not hesitate to enforce U.S. presence at the base if its future was jeopardized.
In his statement, Trump declared, “I will never allow our presence on a base as important as this to ever be undermined.” This comment comes after he previously criticized the U.K.-Mauritius agreement, calling it an “act of great stupidity.”
Diego Garcia serves as a significant hub for military operations, including long-range missions in the Middle East, and is manned by around 2,500 U.S. military and civilian personnel. It has been vital for long-range operations in countries like Afghanistan and Yemen.
Recent discussions between Trump and Starmer reiterated the commitment to ensure the continued operation of the base. The British government expects to spend about £35 billion over the next century on this agreement, including substantial yearly payments to Mauritius.
Critics, including members of the Conservative Party, have expressed concerns that the deal could weaken the U.K.’s strategic position and hurt longstanding security ties with the U.S. Meanwhile, Mauritius maintains its sovereignty over the islands is recognized under international law and seeks to implement the agreement swiftly.
Both governments plan to continue engaging to address any concerns, emphasizing the importance of the deal for mutual interests.
