New Study Reveals Eating Profiles for Effective Weight Loss
Weight loss can vary greatly from person to person, often depending on individual habits and their relationship with food. Recently, researchers at City St. George’s, University of London, discovered a new way to help people achieve sustainable weight loss by categorizing them into specific “eating profiles.”
The study utilized an online quiz featuring 17 questions regarding participants’ eating behaviors, weight management, and exercise habits. Based on their answers, participants were placed into one of four categories: Purple Lavender, Red Chili, Yellow Saffron, or Green Sage. Each profile comes with personalized guidance on maintaining better eating habits, sticking to goals, and increasing physical activity.
Participants in the U.K. study took part in a 12-week digital weight-loss program along with seven weeks of customized advice. Those who completed the quiz and identified with a specific profile showed a higher level of engagement in the program and were more likely to stick with it. They also recorded more meals, interacted more with health coaches, and, on average, lost more weight.
The study, published in JMIR Formative Research, concluded that participants who received weekly advice tailored to their specific profiles had significantly improved engagement in the program. However, the weight loss results were not statistically significant in the short term.
This study did have limitations, including a lack of randomization and reliance on self-reported weight, so larger and more comprehensive studies are necessary to establish if this approach leads to meaningful weight loss in the long run.
Understanding the Four Eating Profiles
The researchers outlined the four eating profiles:
-
Red Chili: Individuals in this category often struggle with controlling their eating habits and might use food to cope with emotions. They may start restrictive diets but frequently find themselves overeating when the diet doesn’t work out.
-
Yellow Saffron: These individuals tend to overeat for pleasure and often prioritize taste over health. They have a tendency to crave high-calorie and sugary foods.
-
Purple Lavender: This group typically sets goals but may give up when faced with challenges. They might lose motivation over time and overlook problems related to their eating habits.
-
Green Sage: These individuals demonstrate controlled eating and a willingness to improve their habits but may lack motivation. They sometimes struggle to meet recommended exercise and diet guidelines, despite making efforts to cook healthy meals at home.
Expert Insights
Health professionals have lauded the quiz for its focus on the emotional and behavioral aspects of weight loss. Registered dietitian Ilana Muhlstein praised the intuitive nature of the quiz and how it provides valuable mindset shifts tailored to each eating profile. Although early results showed no significant difference after seven weeks, there is an opportunity to refine follow-up measures for better consistency in weight loss.
Nutritionist Robin DeCicco emphasized the importance of recognizing personal habits and behaviors surrounding food for achieving health goals. She stated that a generic diet plan often fails to instigate meaningful change unless it considers individual personality types and habits.
In conclusion, understanding one’s eating profile might be a powerful tool for those looking to improve their health and reach their weight loss goals. Remaining adaptable and open to personalizing one’s approach is key to long-lasting change.
