Colorectal Cancer Now Leading Cause of Cancer Deaths in Young Adults
Colorectal cancer has become the top cause of cancer-related deaths among people aged 50 and younger. This marks a notable rise since the 1990s, when it ranked as the fifth deadliest type of cancer. A report released by the American Cancer Society in JAMA highlights this serious trend.
Researchers examined national cancer death statistics over many years and found that colorectal cancer now claims more lives in this age group than any other cancers, including lung, breast, and leukemia. While cancer deaths overall have decreased by about 44% in young adults since 1990, colorectal cancer is a troubling exception. Its mortality rate for those under 50 has soared.
Experts, including Dr. Aparna Parikh from the Mass General Cancer Center, are working to understand this increase. She mentioned that the rise could be linked to a mix of risk factors, including diet, lifestyle, and environmental influences. Among the known risk factors are family history, obesity, smoking, heavy drinking, and diets high in red or processed meats.
Dr. Parikh emphasizes the need for greater public awareness about colorectal cancer, particularly in recognizing early symptoms. Warning signs can include changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, fatigue, and unintended weight loss.
To combat higher rates in younger individuals, education on recognizing these symptoms is essential. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that adults at average risk start screening for colorectal cancer at age 45 and continue until age 75. Those with a family or genetic risk might need to begin screening even earlier, while decisions for those aged 75 to 85 should be personalized based on health and history.
While a colonoscopy is considered the most reliable test, there are also stool-based tests available. If you experience symptoms like weight loss, blood in stool, or changes in bowel movements, a colonoscopy is strongly advised. Awareness and early detection can be crucial in fighting this rising health concern.
