Visakhapatnam: The Indian Navy’s First Training Squadron (1TS) has successfully wrapped up a three-day visit to Singapore as part of their training mission.
During their time at the port, the squadron engaged in a variety of activities, including professional exchanges, training sessions, sports matches, cultural events, and social gatherings.
Captain Tijo K Joseph, the senior officer of the 1TS, along with the Commanding Officers of INS Shardul, INS Sujata, and ICGS Sarathi, paid a courtesy visit to Colonel Tay Choong Hern, the Acting Commander of the Maritime Training and Doctrine Command. They discussed the importance of ongoing military cooperation and shared maritime security interests, reflecting on the long-lasting relationship between India and Singapore that spans over six decades. A special wreath-laying ceremony took place at the Kranji War Memorial, where the officers honored those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
A deck reception was co-hosted by Dr. Shilpak Ambule, India’s High Commissioner to Singapore, and the 1TS senior officer aboard INS Tir and ICGS Sarathi. This event brought together senior leaders from the Republic of Singapore Navy, diplomats, and members of the Indian community.
In his speech, Colonel Tay emphasized the strong partnership between the Indian Navy and the Republic of Singapore Navy. He highlighted their commitment to strengthening defense connections through regular joint exercises and interactions.
Cultural activities were also a key part of the visit, with the Indian Navy Band performing at Our Tampines Mall and the GIIS Auditorium. A friendly dodgeball match between Indian Navy officers and RSN trainees added a fun sporting element to the visit.
The trainees also participated in professional training exercises, which included damage control training at a simulator and a visit to the RSN Museum to learn more about the Royal Singapore Navy’s history.
The ships were open for visits by guests, including International Liaison Officers from the International Fusion Centre, High Commission staff, and families, giving them insight into how the First Training Squadron is shaping future naval leaders.
Additionally, the squadron participated in community engagement efforts, spending time at the Sree Narayan Old Age Home and Nursery.
The visit by the First Training Squadron to Singapore underscores the strong ties between the two nations and aligns with the MAHASAGAR initiative, which focuses on security and growth across regions. The squadron departed Singapore on January 18, further demonstrating India’s commitment to its Act East Policy and expanding its maritime presence beyond South Asia.
