New Facility to Support Farmers’ Mental Health in South Dakota
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Colleen Stegena and her husband have returned to their family farm near Mount Vernon, where they are working on a special project. They are renovating a barn that is believed to be around 100 years old to provide mental health services for local farmers.
Having previously practiced medicine in Mitchell, Colleen hopes to offer therapy that includes interactions with horses and other animals. This approach aims to help alleviate stress for those working in the farming community.
Photojournalist Sam Tastad recently spoke with Colleen to learn more about her innovative efforts to support mental well-being in rural areas.
