Alex Blackwell Backs Nicola Carey for T20 World Cup Spot
Former Australian cricket captain Alex Blackwell has shown strong support for Nicola Carey, suggesting she deserves a place in the national team for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup in England later this year. Carey, who was signed by the Mumbai Indians for 30 lakh during last year’s Women’s Premier League auction, has been performing impressively throughout the tournament.
Currently, she shares the title of leading wicket-taker alongside her teammate Amelia Kerr, having secured five wickets in just two matches. Her standout performance included remarkable figures of 3/37 against the Delhi Capitals last Saturday in Navi Mumbai. In addition to her bowling contributions, Carey has also played vital innings with scores of 40 and 21, showcasing her abilities as an all-rounder for the Mumbai Indians.
“If I were a selector, I would want to hear her thoughts and bring her into the camp,” Blackwell stated in a recent interview with ESPNcricinfo. “If we hope to succeed in the World Cup final in just a couple of months—at the historic Lord’s—it’s crucial to include players like her.”
Blackwell praised Carey for her exceptional performance in the Women’s Big Bash League, noting that he has never seen her play better. He highlighted her versatility, mentioning her skill in swinging the new ball and her impressive batting style. “She’s a left-hander and is fantastic in the field. She’s won many titles,” he added.
Carey’s Impressive Track Record
During her time with the Hobart Hurricanes in the Women’s Big Bash League, Carey made a significant impact, scoring 186 runs with an average of 46.50 and taking 10 wickets at an economical rate of 7.52. Since her international debut in 2018, she has played in 23 ODIs and 27 T20Is for Australia.
However, her spot on the national team was challenged by the rise of Annabel Sutherland, causing her to last appear for Australia in December 2022.
As for the Mumbai Indians, they faced a tough start to their season with a three-wicket loss against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru but quickly bounced back with a solid 50-run victory over the Delhi Capitals. Currently leading the points table, the two-time champions are set to play against Gujarat Giants on Tuesday in Navi Mumbai.
