India Concludes Commonwealth Games 2026 with Strong Performance in Glasgow
India finished its journey at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, securing an impressive fourth place in the medal rankings. The country brought home a total of 39 medals, which included 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze. This achievement is notable, especially considering the reduced number of sports included in the competition, which left out several events where India typically excels.
Australia took the lead in the medal tally, amassing an impressive 171 medals, with 70 of those being gold. England and Canada followed, finishing in second and third places, respectively. India surpassed the host nation, Scotland, by achieving a higher number of silver medals, ultimately cementing its fourth-place status.
Despite the absence of key sports like shooting, badminton, wrestling, hockey, and table tennis—where India has historically earned many medals—the Indian team adapted well to the changes in the competition format. Their determination helped them remain among the top nations over the course of the 11-day event.
Athletics Shines for India
Athletics and para athletics emerged as the standout category for India, contributing 16 medals overall: three gold, eight silver, and five bronze. Olympian Neeraj Chopra secured silver in the men’s javelin, while para athletes like Dilip Mahadu Gavit, Sharmila, and Soman Rana claimed gold for their remarkable performances. Gulveer Singh also had a notable showing with a silver in the men’s 10,000m and a bronze in the 5000m.
Boxing proved to be another area of strength for India, yielding a total of 10 medals—seven gold and three silver. Boxers like Ankush (80kg), Sachin (60kg), and Priya (60kg) topped the podium, showcasing India’s growing prowess in the sport.
Weightlifting added to India’s success with nine medals, highlighted by Olympic champion Mirabai Chanu, who won gold in the women’s 48kg category. The discipline as a whole saw seven silver and one bronze medal.
Judo also made its mark with four medals, featuring historic golds from Harsh Singh and Asmita Dey. In para powerlifting, Jhandu Kumar earned a bronze in the men’s heavyweight event.
A Day to Remember: August 1
August 1 stood out as India’s most prolific day, with 18 medals won. Boxers clinched seven gold medals, while athletics and para athletics added to the tally with several podium finishes, including Neeraj Chopra’s silver javelin throw. This remarkable haul solidified India’s standing among the top four nations as the competition drew to a close.
Final Day Challenges
However, the concluding day saw India’s medal hopes fade. The last chance for a medal rested on judoka Ishroop Narang, who fought in the women’s -78kg category but lost in a closely contested match against Canada’s Coralie Godbout. Other Indian judokas, Yash Ghangas and Avtar Singh, were eliminated in earlier rounds. In cycling, Ronaldo Singh Laitonjam finished 20th in the men’s 1000m time trial, while young para-cyclist Lisha Das concluded her race in sixth place in the women’s C4-C5 1000m time trial, marking the end of India’s participation in Glasgow.
Looking Ahead to Ahmedabad
Even with the absence of several traditional sports, the Indian contingent demonstrated its depth and variety in performances across athletics, boxing, weightlifting, and judo. As the focus now shifts to the future, Ahmedabad will officially receive the Commonwealth Games flag and the King’s Baton during the closing ceremony, kicking off preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. This will be India’s second time hosting the event, following the New Delhi Games in 2010.
