TEHRAN: Efforts Underway to Revive Iran-US Agreement
An Iranian lawmaker announced on Sunday that efforts are being made to revive a previously established agreement that temporarily halted the conflict between Iran and the United States back in June.
Hassan Ghashghavi, who speaks for the parliament’s national security commission, mentioned in a video interview that mediators are particularly focusing on renewing the 14-point agreement known as the Islamabad memorandum. “The key issue we must address is the Strait of Hormuz, and discussions are ongoing,” he stated.
This agreement was reached with the help of Iran’s neighboring countries, Qatar and Pakistan, and discussions took place in Islamabad. The deal aimed to establish arrangements concerning the Strait of Hormuz and to facilitate renewed diplomatic efforts between Tehran and Washington for a more comprehensive agreement. It also called for a cessation of hostilities in Lebanon, where Israel has been involved in conflict with the Hezbollah group.
Unfortunately, the agreement fell apart when both Iran and the United States accused each other of breaching its terms.
Recently, former US President Donald Trump noted that Washington and Israel had decided to refrain from further strikes against Iran, provided a deal to conclude the ongoing conflict is reached soon. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump mentioned that an agreement had been established, leading to the decision to hold off on military action.
Ghashghavi, a former diplomat, indicated that discussions and exchanges of views on proposals are continuously happening, although he did not provide further details.
