Aakash Chopra Questions Squad Selections for Upcoming ODI Series
Former cricketer Aakash Chopra has raised concerns about the selection of Rishabh Pant and Nitish Kumar Reddy as India prepares for its ODI series against New Zealand. While many expected Pant to be dropped, he has retained his place in the squad, leaving fans and experts surprised. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Tilak Verma, who played against South Africa, have been omitted in the latest roster.
Chopra noted that Tilak’s removal was anticipated with Shubman Gill’s return, yet many were taken aback by Ruturaj’s exclusion, especially after his impressive century in his last match. On social media platform X, Chopra mentioned that Ruturaj’s exit was due to the return of Shreyas Iyer, pending clearance. He questioned why Pant was not utilized in the No. 4 batting position during the series against South Africa when it could have benefited the team.
“Ruturaj misses out because Iyer is back, and Tilak is out because Gill returned. This raises a question—why didn’t they give Pant a chance at No. 4 when they had the opportunity?” Chopra remarked, suggesting that if Pant is kept as a backup keeper, it would have made sense to play him when Iyer was absent.
Moreover, Chopra expressed his frustration over Nitish Kumar Reddy’s situation. Although he was included in the squad due to Hardik Pandya’s absence, Chopra pointed out that with the team opting for four fast bowlers, Nitish might not get much playing time. He asked, “If Nitish is considered vital to the team, why isn’t he getting to play? How can we prepare for the future if he’s always sitting on the bench?”
India’s first ODI against New Zealand is set to take place in Vadodara on January 11.
