SpaceX to Reconfigure Starlink Satellites for Safety
In an important move, SpaceX plans to improve the safety of its Starlink satellite network by lowering the altitude of thousands of satellites in 2026. This decision comes after a recent incident where a Starlink satellite encountered an onboard issue, releasing some debris and causing it to drop four kilometers in altitude.
Michael Nicolls, Vice President of Starlink Engineering at SpaceX, announced that the firm will be lowering all of its satellites currently operating at an altitude of 550 kilometers (about 342 miles) down to 480 kilometers (roughly 298 miles). This change aims to reduce the risk of collisions in space and tackle the growing problem of orbital debris.
By making this adjustment, SpaceX hopes to benefit from “thinner” traffic in orbit and leverage the natural drag from the atmosphere. As solar activity decreases, the atmosphere becomes less dense, which can lead to a longer time for satellites to naturally deorbit. Lowering the satellites will greatly shorten this time from over four years to just a few months under specific conditions, significantly enhancing safety.
Moreover, Nicolls emphasized that they are coordinating this effort closely with other satellite operators, regulatory bodies, and the United States Space Command. The plan is to condense the Starlink orbits, which should lower the overall risk of collisions by reducing the number of satellites operating below 500 kilometers.
Currently, Starlink boasts a fleet of over 9,000 operational satellites, with only two that have failed. Nonetheless, Quick deorbiting of any malfunctioning satellites is a priority for SpaceX, to mitigate risks associated with unplanned maneuvers from other satellite operators.
