GoFundMe Raises Over $2.6 Million for Hero Disarming Gunman During Sydney Shooting

A remarkable outpouring of support has emerged for Ahmed al Ahmed, who became a hero after disarming a gunman during a recent mass shooting at a Hanukkah event on Bondi Beach, Sydney. The attack, which occurred on December 14, tragically claimed the lives of at least 15 people and injured many others.

Since the incident, more than $2.6 million has been raised through a GoFundMe campaign for al Ahmed, a Syrian-born Australian Muslim, who was severely injured during the attack when a second shooter targeted him. As of Sunday morning, nearly 45,000 people contributed to the campaign, acknowledging al Ahmed’s bravery and selflessness.

The fundraiser highlights al Ahmed’s quick response amid chaos, noting, “In a moment of danger, he stepped forward without hesitation.” Reports indicate he was shot twice while protecting others.

Footage from the event shows al Ahmed, a father of two young daughters, bravely tackling the gunman and wresting the weapon from him. One of the fundraising organizers, social media influencer Zachery Dereniowski, visited al Ahmed in the hospital on Friday, presenting a check for $2.5 million, the amount raised up to that point.

In the emotional video shared online, al Ahmed expressed disbelief while sitting in his hospital bed, asking, “I deserve it?” to which Dereniowski replied, “Every penny.”

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also paid a visit to al Ahmed, calling him an “Australian hero.” He praised al Ahmed for risking his life to save others and highlighted how Australians show their true colors in times of crisis. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also commended al Ahmed’s courageous actions.

The Australian government is currently treating the shooting as a terror attack aimed at the Jewish community. A 24-year-old suspect, who allegedly carried out the attack alongside his father, now faces murder charges. Tragically, the father died at the scene.

As the nation mourns, tributes are pouring in to honor the victims, with events held to commemorate their lives while showcasing the resilience and courage demonstrated by al Ahmed.
