Polish Authorities Prevent Suspected ISIS Attack on Christmas Market
Poland’s security forces have successfully thwarted a suspected ISIS-inspired plan to bomb a Christmas market. A 19-year-old student, identified as Mateusz W., has been arrested and charged with preparing for a mass casualty attack, according to government officials.
This incident follows similar heightened security measures in Germany and the U.K., in response to recent violent events, including a mass shooting during a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney that left 16 people dead.
The arrest took place in late November at an apartment in Lublin, where the Internal Security Agency (ABW) apprehended the suspect. Authorities believe Mateusz was researching how to create explosives and aimed to join a terrorist group to carry out the attack.
Jacek Dobrzyński, speaking for the Minister’s Coordinator of Special Services, emphasized that the crime’s intent was to instill fear among the public and support the Islamic State. During the investigation, police seized items linked to Islamic extremism and digital devices. Mateusz is currently held in custody for three months while the investigation continues.
Dobrzyński also mentioned a previous case from June where three 19-year-olds were charged with planning extremist attacks, including a potential assault on a school.
In Germany, police recently arrested five men suspected of plotting an attack on a Christmas market. An Egyptian national alleged to be an Islamic preacher reportedly called for violence during mosque gatherings in the Dingolfing-Landau area.
Meanwhile, in the U.K., counterterrorism efforts have intensified, with authorities increasing armed patrols in major cities, including London. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Jon Savell warned that large public gatherings, such as festive events and religious services, could be targets for terrorist activities, especially following the recent attack in Sydney.
In the U.S., authorities have also disrupted a separate plot aimed at a New Year’s Eve event in Southern California. Four individuals from an anti-government group have been arrested for allegedly planning bombings against companies linked to American interests.
As security concerns rise, officials worldwide are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
