Melania Trump and Olena Zelenska Team Up to Highlight Children’s Crisis in Ukraine

First Lady Melania Trump and Ukraine’s First Lady Olena Zelenska are collaborating to raise awareness about the critical issue of Russian abductions of Ukrainian children. This effort aims to confront Russia’s troubling operations to take and influence these children.

Maksym Maksymov, a spokesperson for the organization Bring Kids Back UA, noted that the unique roles of both first ladies strengthen the message. “Together, they ensure that no child taken is forgotten. One shares the story from the heart of the crisis, while the other spreads the word globally,” he explained.

Melania Trump’s involvement has already reunited seven Ukrainian children with their families, and she recently supported the return of another eight. Maksymov praised her as a compassionate voice, saying, “When Melania speaks, people listen. She uses her influence to shed light on the struggles faced by Ukrainian children.”

Zelenska continues her important work on the ground in Ukraine, visiting shelters and schools to meet children impacted by the conflict. Her hands-on approach emphasizes the urgency of addressing this situation. Under her guidance, Ukraine has made moves to criminalize child deportations and create safeguards for their return.

Maksymov highlighted that the Ukrainian government has already sanctioned individuals involved in these abductions. In a previous effort, Melania Trump even sent a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging protection for children worldwide.

As of now, nearly 20,000 children are reported missing due to these circumstances, although verifying each case is a challenge due to Russia’s secrecy. So far, Ukraine has confirmed 9,221 cases. One particularly troubling case involves a boy named Bohdan Yermokhin. After being taken to Russia, he faced attempts to erase his Ukrainian identity.

Maksymov stressed the need for unconditional return of all abducted children, stating, “The war has robbed them of their childhood. Every child deserves to be with their loved ones.” He believes that lasting peace cannot be achieved while any child remains in the hands of those who took them.
