Trump Increases Pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro
President Trump is intensifying military pressure on Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, coinciding with a vote in Congress aimed at condemning socialism. This situation is drawing attention as U.S. military presence grows in the Caribbean, with the deployment of bombers and warships targeting drug trafficking and “narco-terrorist” operations in the vicinity of Venezuela.
In light of recent events, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has cautioned airlines about flying over Venezuela. They urged airline operators to be careful while navigating through the Maiquetia flight information region due to substantial military activity and security concerns. The FAA highlighted that threats could endanger aircraft at any altitude, prompting airlines to notify the FAA at least 72 hours in advance of any planned flights over the area.
While flights from American carriers to Venezuela have been suspended since 2019, some airlines are still permitted to traverse its airspace. For instance, American Airlines recently announced that it halted flights over Venezuela in October, while Delta Air Lines indicated it stopped flying over the country “a while ago.”
The FAA noted an uptick in interference with Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) in the Maiquetia region since September, which is linked to the Venezuelan military’s increased readiness. Civil aircraft reported experiencing GNSS issues, which can influence crucial communication and safety equipment. Additionally, there has been a rise in military exercises and mobilization of Venezuelan forces, highlighting the growing tensions in the area.
U.S. Navy warships, like the USS Gravely, have recently conducted joint exercises near Venezuela’s coast as Washington takes a firmer stance against Maduro and drug traffickers. The FAA remains vigilant, noting that while Venezuela hasn’t shown clear intent to strike civil aviation, their military capabilities remain a concern.
As this situation unfolds, the implications for air travel and regional security continue to be significant.
