BCCI Names Consistent Squad for New Zealand Clash and T20 World Cup 2026

The national selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is expected to pick similar teams for both the five-match T20I series against New Zealand and the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, according to a source from the BCCI.

Although the schedule for the World Cup hasn’t been released yet, the tournament is likely to kick off on February 7. Teams are required to submit their final squads, consisting of 15 players, a month before the tournament begins. The selection committee will make their choices and can still adjust the squad until a certain deadline.

This approach mirrors the one used during the 2024 edition held in the Americas, which India famously won under Rohit Sharma’s leadership. The series against New Zealand starts on January 21 and will be the last encounter before the World Cup.

A source informed PTI that with only ten T20 matches remaining before the World Cup, significant changes to the squad are unlikely unless an injury occurs. “One main reason for this is to maintain continuity. The squad selected for the New Zealand series is expected to remain intact because of the short time frame,” they said.

The five matches against New Zealand will take place in different cities: Nagpur (January 21), Raipur (January 23), Guwahati (January 25), Visakhapatnam (January 28), and Thiruvananthapuram (January 31).

The upcoming T20I series against South Africa is seen as a crucial opportunity for selectors, including Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav, to evaluate players ahead of the New Zealand series, which will serve as important preparation for the big tournament.

While injuries could force changes, the selection panel is likely to prefer sticking with their initial squad, avoiding the last-minute adjustments that occurred during the Champions Trophy in Dubai earlier this year. Initially, Yashasvi Jaiswal was part of the Champions Trophy squad, but due to the playing conditions in Dubai and the team’s need for a mystery spinner, Varun Chakravarthy was brought in during the series against England. Unfortunately, Jaiswal was ultimately left out, which set an uneasy precedent for the team.
