Gunmen Kidnap Students in Nigeria
In a troubling incident early Friday, armed men abducted students and staff from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Nigeria. This event highlights the ongoing dangers faced by Christian institutions in the region.
According to reports from Nigerian news source Arise TV, 52 children were taken from the school, located in the Papiri community of Niger State. Abubakar Usman, secretary to the Niger State government, confirmed the incident but did not specify the exact number of those kidnapped.
Local authorities, including the Niger State Police, reported that both military and security forces were sent to the area of the attack. St. Mary’s School caters to students aged 12 to 17. Sadly, a security staff member suffered serious injuries during the incident, as noted by the Catholic Diocese of Kontagora.
Usman condemned the abductions in a statement, indicating that the school had reopened despite warnings about potential risks. “St. Mary’s School went ahead with academic activities without informing or getting clearance from the State Government, putting students and staff in harm’s way,” he stated.
This abduction comes on the heels of another alarming case earlier this week where 25 girls were kidnapped from a boarding school in Kebbi State, with at least one staff member killed. The search for the missing girls is still ongoing.
Furthermore, gunmen attacked the Christ Apostolic Church on Wednesday, resulting in at least two fatalities and the kidnapping of the pastor along with 38 worshippers. Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers, armed with guns, demanded a ransom of approximately 100 million naira (about $69,000) for each captured individual.
Continued Violence Against Christians
Nigeria is facing a concerning pattern of violence against Christians, which has drawn international attention. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, recently hosted an event discussing the issue, labeling the killings as “genocide wearing the mask of chaos.” He emphasized that countless lives are affected as faith-based violence escalates.
Rapper Nicki Minaj, who has spoken out against the persecution of Christians in Nigeria, was present at Waltz’s event. She shared her concerns about families being torn apart and communities living in fear simply due to their religious beliefs.
