Historic H5N5 Avian Flu Case Reported in Washington State

Concerns Rise as First Human Case of H5N5 Bird Flu is Reported in the U.S.

Health officials in Washington State have confirmed the first human infection with the H5N5 strain of bird flu in the United States. The case involves an older adult from Grays Harbor County, who remains hospitalized after showing symptoms similar to influenza earlier this month.

This diagnosis marks the first confirmed human case of bird flu since last February. According to the Washington State Department of Health (DOH), the patient had a mixed flock of domestic poultry at home, which may have been exposed to wild birds.

Testing has confirmed that the identified virus is H5N5, a type of avian influenza that has previously only been found in animals. Officials report that domestic poultry and wild birds are likely sources of the infection, and the investigation is still ongoing.

So far, public health experts have stated that there is no increased risk to the general public from this virus. The DOH emphasized that transmission of avian influenza between humans is extremely rare and has never been documented in the U.S.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the DOH currently assess the risk to the public as low. They encourage everyone who comes into contact with birds to take precautions, such as avoiding sick or dead birds and reporting any unusual wildlife activity.

While the seasonal flu vaccine does not protect against bird flu, officials highlight its importance because infection with both the regular flu and bird flu could help create a new strain that spreads more easily between people.

Earlier this year, the CDC had declared the emergency status for the H5N1 strain of avian influenza to be over, as the number of animal infections declined and no human cases were reported since February.

Health experts continue to monitor this situation closely, reminding the public to stay informed and take necessary precautions when handling birds.
