Elon Musk is making waves in the tech world with his support for the idea of orbital data centers. This new approach aims to meet the growing demand for computing power on Earth, especially for AI applications. Musk, who leads SpaceX, shared his plans on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating that SpaceX will modify its Starlink technology to create large data facilities in space. He believes that scaling up Starlink’s satellite technology, which already uses high-speed laser links, can be an effective solution.

This idea, once considered out there, is now gaining serious attention. Advocates cite the benefits of unlimited solar energy and minimal impact on Earth’s environment. Many traditional data centers are facing criticism for their high energy usage and land requirements. On the flip side, some experts argue that building data centers in space might be too costly and technically challenging.

Musk’s announcement follows interest from other significant figures in the tech industry. For example, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt recently bought a rocket company, Relativity Space, to support his vision for creating computing hubs beyond our planet. Additionally, Amazon’s founder, Jeff Bezos, has predicted that in the next 10 to 20 years, large data centers in space could become a reality, emphasizing the endless solar energy available there.

Bezos, speaking at an event in Italy, suggested that the unique advantages of space—including consistent solar power—could lead to cost-effective data centers that outperform those on Earth. As demand for AI storage and processing continues to grow, the competition is heating up among tech leaders like Musk, Bezos, and Schmidt, each looking to lead the way in this exciting new frontier.
