Researchers Identify New “Blue Zone” in Sardinia, Italy

National Geographic scientists have potentially uncovered a new “blue zone,” a term used to describe areas where people live significantly longer than average. This new area is Bolotana, a small village located on the picturesque island of Sardinia, Italy.

A recent study revealed that out of Bolotana’s 2,262 residents, ten individuals are at least 100 years old. This figure is striking, as it is around ten times higher than the average number of centenarians found in Sardinia and eleven times higher than in the United States.

A team of researchers, including Dan Buettner from Blue Zones, a company dedicated to studying longevity, has started examining the factors that contribute to the extraordinary life spans of Bolotana’s residents. The study’s findings were shared in Frontiers in Aging.

Key Habits of Long-Lived Residents

Buettner outlined three main lifestyle habits shared by those who live into their 100s in Bolotana:

  1. Regular Movement: Locals frequently walk along steep streets to visit shops, cafes, and friends.

  2. Plant-Based Diet: A typical diet consists mainly of beans, vegetables, wheat, olives, and olive oil.

  3. Strong Social Connections: Residents maintain close relationships through communal meals, church gatherings, and social activities.

Although the study does not explicitly prove that these habits cause longer lives, researchers are looking into how the village’s culture and environment might support higher survival rates.

Buettner noted that Bolotana’s women enjoy the second-highest life expectancy at age 70, just behind Hong Kong. He suggested that the supportive community might lift some burdens from women, helping them thrive in ways that might differ from other regions.

Community and Connection in Bolotana

Unlike the original blue zone identified in Sardinia, Bolotana has retained its agricultural roots. Buettner explained that men in Bolotana participate more in family life compared to those in the previous blue zone, which may help ease the pressures on women.

He highlighted the importance of social gatherings: women in Bolotana engage in activities like baking and attending church together, fostering strong ties that may enhance their health and happiness.

Sardinia’s Unique Diet

Diet is a key aspect of Bolotana’s longevity. Meals are mostly plant-based, especially focusing on beans. Traditional breakfasts might consist of bread and cheese, while lunch often features minestrone soup packed with local veggies and beans.

In Bolotana, meat is infrequently served and usually reserved for special occasions. The locals prefer cooking with olive oil derived from ancient olive trees, which researchers are studying for its potential health benefits.

Living Naturally

Interestingly, Buettner points out that Bolotana’s residents do not actively seek to extend their lives. Instead, their longevity seems to stem from a natural way of living, where they engage in daily activities that involve walking instead of adhering to a rigorous exercise regimen.

He emphasized that making environmental changes that encourage movement—like having walkable neighborhoods—could significantly improve health and longevity in other communities.

For those interested in longevity, Bolotana stands as a testament that often, the key to a longer, happier life lies in simple daily interactions and a connected community.
