Call for Investigation After 80-Year-Old Woman Found Dead on Cruise

The daughter of an 80-year-old woman, who was discovered dead after allegedly being left behind by a cruise ship, is urging authorities to investigate her mother’s death. Katherine Rees described the situation as “a failure of care and common sense.”

Suzanne Rees was on a 60-day luxury cruise in Australia when she went missing. She was last seen participating in a group hike on Lizard Island, located approximately 200 miles north of Cairns, but did not make it back to the Coral Adventurer cruise ship, which departed around 6 p.m. Saturday. Eyewitnesses reported hearing radio chatter and saw the ship returning to the island later.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) was informed about the incident late Saturday night and quickly began working with Queensland Police to search for the missing woman. An AMSA representative stated they are investigating the circumstances of why she was not accounted for during boarding and will take necessary actions if any violations are found.

Katherine mentioned to ABC Australia that her mother was feeling unwell during the hike and had been told to descend without any escort. She expressed hope that understanding the events leading up to her mother’s passing might uncover preventive measures for the future.

Following the tragedy, the Coroner’s Court of Queensland confirmed that Rees’ case has been referred for investigation. Once completed, it will be determined if a public inquest is necessary.

Mark Fifield, CEO of Coral Expeditions, expressed condolences to Rees’ family and stated that the company is providing support throughout this difficult time. He emphasized their commitment to cooperating with the ongoing investigations.

The Coral Adventurer’s operations fall under the Australian Navigation Act 2012 and associated workplace regulations. As the inquiry proceeds, more details about the situation will likely unfold.
