Trump Observes Thailand and Cambodia Forge Peace Pact Months After Ceasefire Deal

Cambodia and Thailand Expand Ceasefire Agreement

On Sunday, Cambodia and Thailand took a significant step towards peace by signing an expanded ceasefire agreement, a move facilitated by former U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this summer. This agreement comes in the wake of a border conflict that resulted in numerous casualties and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people.

At the annual summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul put pen to paper to formalize the ceasefire. Trump’s intervention included the threat of increased tariffs on both nations, which played a role in pushing the leaders to agree on a resolution.

As part of the new agreement, Thailand is required to release 18 Cambodian soldiers who had been detained during the conflict. Additionally, both nations have committed to starting the process of withdrawing heavy weaponry from the border area.

This development marks a hopeful turn in relations between Cambodia and Thailand, paving the way for a more peaceful future in the region.
