Certain Fruits May Help You Sleep Better

Struggling to fall asleep? You might want to consider grabbing some fresh fruits during your next grocery run. Research suggests that some fruits contain natural hormones and minerals that can assist with sleep.

Nutrition expert Kendall Mackintosh emphasizes that certain fruits are rich in melatonin and antioxidants, which support your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle. She highlights that as the days get shorter in fall, it’s especially important to boost melatonin levels to enhance sleep quality and mood.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 14.5% of Americans reported difficulty sleeping regularly in 2020.

Tart Cherries

Tart cherries are one fruit that can promote better sleep. They help increase melatonin production, a hormone responsible for regulating sleep. These cherries also contain tryptophan, an amino acid that aids in producing serotonin and melatonin.

For those looking to improve their sleep, Montmorency cherries are particularly recommended due to their high melatonin content.

Kiwi

Another fruit that can enhance sleep is kiwi. A study published in the National Library of Medicine found that eating kiwi can significantly improve sleep quality and duration. Athletes participating in the study reported better sleep and daytime function after consuming kiwis over a four-week period.

Grapes

Grapes are also noted for their sleep benefits. Registered dietitian Anthony DiMarino mentions that grapes contain melatonin and can be a great low-calorie snack in the evening. He recommends choosing whole grapes instead of processed products like grape juice or raisins to capture the most nutritional benefits.

Lifestyle Factors

Beyond diet, Mackintosh advises that lifestyle practices are crucial for quality sleep. Simple changes like reducing screen time before bed and keeping your bedroom cool and dark can significantly improve your sleep experience.

Combining diet and healthy habits creates a strong foundation for better rest. Making these adjustments may lead to improved resilience and long-term well-being. So, the next time you’re searching for a snack, consider reaching for these sleep-friendly fruits!
