Brief: Deadly Attack Outside Manchester Synagogue Identified as Terrorist Incident
Police have confirmed the identity of the suspect in a tragic attack outside a Manchester synagogue on Yom Kippur. Jihad Al-Shamie, a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian heritage, is accused of carrying out the assault, which resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to four others.
Al-Shamie entered the UK as a child and became a citizen in 2006. Authorities are still investigating the exact reasons behind his actions. The Metropolitan Police have classified the incident as a terrorist attack, given that it coincided with a significant religious occasion for the Jewish community.
Witnesses reported seeing Al-Shamie drive a vehicle into pedestrians outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue at approximately 9:30 a.m. before using a knife to attack. Although he wore what seemed to be an explosives belt, it was later determined to be a fake.
In response to the situation, armed police arrived swiftly and engaged Al-Shamie, who was shot dead. The police have since confirmed that one of the deceased victims may have been struck by police gunfire during the chaos. The victims were identified as Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66.
Local neighbors shared their shock, describing Al-Shamie as a typical young man who often worked out in his backyard. Following the attack, three additional individuals were arrested on suspicion of involvement in terrorism-related activities.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the violence, emphasizing the rising threat of antisemitism. He reassured the Jewish community of his commitment to ensuring their safety and security.
This incident follows a troubling rise in antisemitic events in the UK, especially after the conflict in Gaza that escalated in late 2023. Reports indicate more than 1,500 antisemitic incidents have occurred in the first half of this year alone, marking a significant increase.
The police continue to investigate the case, seeking to understand the full extent and motivation behind this tragic attack.
