British Blogger Detained Over Anti-Hamas Meme Shared Online

A blogger in the UK is speaking out after being arrested for sharing an anti-Hamas meme on social media. Pete North, 47, from Yorkshire, recorded his encounter with police officers who arrived at his home on September 25 to inform him of his detention. The officers claimed that his online post was deemed inappropriate by a member of their hate crime team.

In the video captured by North, an officer states he is being arrested “on suspicion of publishing or distributing written material intended to stir up racial hatred.” The meme, shared by North in August, featured a Palestinian flag with text criticizing both Hamas and broader sentiments against Palestine and Islam.

North shared his experience, telling The Telegraph that while his meme included offensive remarks, the police seemed particularly focused on the content regarding Hamas. He defended his post, explaining, “Hamas is recognized as a terrorist organization, including in the UK.”

During his police interview, North pressed the officer about whether he knew the background of Hamas. North said the officer appeared “oblivious” about their actions, including the October 7 attack on civilians, which heightened the seriousness of the group’s notoriety.

After hours of questioning, North was released without any charges. He expressed his beliefs regarding free speech, stating that posting political content online should not be a police matter. “No one should face police inquiries for tweeting memes,” he added. North believes such actions are meant to intimidate individuals from sharing controversial opinions.

North Yorkshire Police confirmed the arrest, indicating that inquiries are ongoing.

This incident highlights ongoing debates around free speech and the limits of online expression.
