Drone Sightings Cause Stir in Denmark

Denmark has experienced a series of unexplained drone sightings, particularly over military sites, including its largest base. This follows recent incidents at airports that led to the grounding of flights. The situation has prompted the Danish government to consider its next steps.

Late Saturday, Denmark’s Armed Forces confirmed that drones were spotted at multiple defense locations. A representative stated that various military resources were deployed to address the situation. Police reported sightings near the Karup air base in western Denmark.

Background on Airport Incursions

Earlier in the week, Aalborg Airport, which is shared with the Danish military, closed due to similar drone sightings. Danish officials labeled this incident as a “hybrid attack” carried out by a “professional actor.” They clarified that the drones were launched locally and did not originate from Russia.

In a related incident, Norway’s police were also investigating drone sightings near an airbase that houses F-35 fighter jets. Security personnel at the base reported seeing unusual activity outside the perimeter.

Responses and Reactions

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described the events as potentially the “most serious attack on Danish critical infrastructure” so far. While there was suspicion of Russian involvement in a previous incident at Copenhagen Airport, she stated that the investigation is ongoing and no options were being ruled out.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte expressed that the alliance is taking these occurrences seriously, affirming that NATO allies are collaborating to ensure the safety of critical infrastructures.

Although there has been speculation about invoking NATO’s Article 4 to bring together allied nations regarding the drone sightings, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen indicated that they see no immediate need to do so. He noted that Denmark is still contemplating how to respond to the drone situations while not planning to take drastic measures yet.
