India’s Thrilling Super 4s Match Against Sri Lanka Sets the Stage for Asia Cup Final
India’s recent Super 4s match against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup was one for the books, even though it didn’t affect the tournament standings. The thrilling game came down to a Super Over, leaving players exhausted and prompting the Indian team to focus on recovery before their upcoming final against Pakistan, just 36 hours away.
India’s captain, Suryakumar Yadav, described the match as akin to a final. “It was quite taxing on the team. Let’s prioritize recovery tonight and not dwell on the final just yet. A few of the players suffered from cramps during the game. Tomorrow will be about recuperation, and we’ll show up ready for the final,” Yadav said when asked about the next big match against Pakistan.
Yadav also pointed out that the hot and humid conditions in Dubai took a toll on some players, including Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya.
In a notable moment during the game, Pandya bowled just one over and took a wicket before leaving the field for the rest of the match, leaving substitutes Rinku Singh and Jitesh Sharma to fill in. This required Yadav to rely on his other bowlers to complete the 20 overs.
The match itself was an action-packed affair, with India scoring an impressive 202 runs, their highest total of the tournament. Abhishek Sharma played a key role in that innings. Sri Lanka fought back bravely, with Pathum Nissanka scoring a stunning 107 runs off just 58 balls, leading the chase until the game ended in a tie, necessitating a Super Over.
Reflecting on the match, Yadav stated, “It really felt like a final. The boys showed great spirit, especially in the second half. I encouraged them to treat this as a semi-final and keep up the energy. It was fantastic to see players like Sanju and Tilak step up.”
In the Super Over, Arshdeep Singh stepped up with remarkable composure. “Arshdeep has handled pressure before, and he did what we needed him to do,” Yadav said. Singh allowed just two runs and took two crucial wickets, setting India up for an easy target of three runs to win, which Yadav achieved with just one ball.
While India celebrated their victory, it came at a cost. With little time to recover, they must carefully manage their fitness as they prepare to face Pakistan in a highly anticipated Asia Cup final.
