Greta Thunberg’s Flotilla Faces Musical Disruption Amid Gaza Aid Efforts
In an unusual turn of events, climate activist Greta Thunberg and her flotilla have encountered a musical interruption during their journey to deliver aid to Gaza. According to reports, their radios were hijacked, and the famous Swedish pop group ABBA’s song “Lay All Your Love On Me” played on repeat for hours.
The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), which is the group Thunberg is part of, pointed fingers at Israel for this surprising incident. Members of the flotilla reported that several of their boats were hit with this musical barrage, which GSF member Yasemin Acar described in a video, stating, “We don’t know where this sound is coming from, but it seems other vessels are facing the same issue.”
The flotilla consists of numerous boats from 44 countries, all on a mission to deliver food, water, and medicine to civilians in Gaza. GSF has mentioned that Israeli military drones also targeted some ships on Tuesday, reportedly causing damage to their communication equipment.
As the flotilla nears Gaza’s coast, about 200 miles away, tensions surrounding their mission escalate. Earlier, Tunisian officials dismissed claims that one of their boats was bombed by a drone, labeling the reports as untrue. The GSF stated their Portuguese-flagged vessel did suffer damage but that none of the crew were hurt.
In response to the disruptive tactics, the GSF declared, “Acts of aggression aimed at intimidating and derailing our mission will not deter us.” They emphasized their commitment to reaching Gaza and providing assistance to its people.
Thunberg’s current attempt to lead a flotilla comes in the backdrop of a devastating war in Gaza, which has led to significant casualties according to local health officials. She described the mission at a press conference as a necessity, emphasizing that people in Palestine are being denied fundamental needs for survival.
This isn’t Thunberg’s first attempt at delivering aid; earlier this year, she was deported when Israeli forces intercepted her ship, preventing it from reaching Gaza. The ongoing naval blockade has been enforced since Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007.
As the flotilla moves forward, Thunberg and her supporters continue to highlight the humanitarian crisis facing the residents of Gaza, insisting that their mission is about survival and solidarity.
