IPL 2026: Shreyas Iyer Entrusts PBKS Playoff Dreams to MI Following LSG Victory – “I’ve Done My Part, Now It’s All About Mumbai”

Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer expressed his excitement after scoring an impressive unbeaten century against Lucknow Super Giants, keeping PBKS in contention for the IPL 2026 playoffs. Born in Mumbai, Iyer now finds himself rooting for the Mumbai Indians, as Punjab’s playoff hopes hinge on Mumbai’s performance against Rajasthan Royals this Sunday.

With his dazzling 101 runs off just 51 balls, Shreyas helped Punjab snap a frustrating six-match losing streak, leading the team to a convincing seven-wicket victory. This win temporarily put PBKS at 15 points after 14 matches, placing them in the pivotal fourth spot on the points table.

However, their fate is not entirely in their hands. If Rajasthan Royals lose against Mumbai, PBKS will secure a playoff spot. But, if RR wins, Punjab will be eliminated, despite Shreyas’s fantastic innings.

“I’m really happy. This is my first hundred of the season, and it came just when we needed it,” Shreyas said after the match. He mentioned feeling hopeful as he supported MI from the Punjab camp.

Iyer’s century came under intense pressure while chasing 197 runs, especially after losing two early wickets. He formed a crucial 140-run partnership with Prabhsimran Singh, who contributed 69 runs off 39 balls. After reaching his half-century, Shreyas stepped up, scoring his last 51 runs in just 18 balls and sealed his century with a six that clinched the match.

### PBKS Playoff Path

Now that Punjab has finished its league matches with 15 points, here’s what they need:
– Rajasthan Royals must lose to Mumbai Indians.
– If RR loses, PBKS advances to the playoffs.
– If RR wins, PBKS will be out, regardless of Shreyas’s performance.
– Kolkata Knight Riders could also reach 15 points if they beat Delhi Capitals, possibly making Net Run Rate crucial for qualification between KKR and PBKS.

Currently, Punjab holds a hopeful position but must wait until Sunday for the outcomes.

Interestingly, Shreyas shared that the team focused on keeping things simple before the important game against Lucknow. After a tough stretch of losses, he didn’t want to add pressure with tactical meetings. “We didn’t say much, just kept it straightforward. I even told Ricky Ponting that we should skip meetings altogether,” Iyer explained.

Their relaxed approach showed as PBKS chased down 197 runs in just 18 overs. Shreyas notably dominated pacer Mohammed Shami, hitting three sixes in a single over and expertly dispatching the spinners throughout the innings.

For now, Punjab’s team can only wait and watch, hoping their hometown heroes, the Mumbai Indians, can help keep their playoff dreams alive.
