UNITED NATIONS:
US Vice President JD Vance expressed concerns on Wednesday, stating that former President Donald Trump is becoming increasingly impatient with Russia. This shift comes as the US firmens its approach towards Moscow, following stalled diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
In an unexpected statement during the UN meeting on Tuesday, Trump suggested that Ukraine might not only reclaim all the territory lost to Russia but could potentially acquire even more. Vance remarked that Trump believes Russia isn’t making sufficient concessions to end the war, warning that continued refusal to negotiate could lead to severe consequences for Russia.
Earlier in New York, US diplomat Marco Rubio clashed with his Russian counterpart, urging for an end to the violence and calling on Russia to take real steps towards a lasting resolution. In response, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov rejected the proposals from Ukraine and some European nations aimed at prolonging the conflict.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised Trump for his unexpected stance against Russia but highlighted that NATO alone cannot ensure Ukraine’s security. He noted that international organizations are not strong enough to halt ongoing aggression, saying, “Being part of a military alliance doesn’t guarantee safety.”
Zelensky reflected on a positive meeting with Trump, although he noted Trump’s previous dismissal of NATO membership for Ukraine. He emphasized the importance of Europe’s support and the US’s role in ensuring security for Ukraine.
Trump’s recent statements indicate a notable change in his stance, suggesting Ukraine could regain all its territories with the backing of the EU and NATO—a contrast to his previous claims that such territory recovery was unlikely.
Zelensky warned that Europe cannot afford to allow Moldova to fall under Russian influence, fearing it could end up like Belarus and Georgia. He described how Russia is attempting to extend its reach into Moldova ahead of its upcoming elections, amid concerns over misinformation campaigns linked to Moscow.
Zelensky also raised alarms about the increasing use of autonomous drones and the ensuing arms race fueled by artificial intelligence. He underscored the pressing need for robust international security measures, questioning whether peace can be maintained without a strong global response to threats.
While in New York for the UN General Assembly, Zelensky emphasized Ukraine’s efforts to boost its military production, stating, “We may not have the grand missiles showcased in parades, but we have drones capable of reaching significant distances. We had no choice but to develop these to protect ourselves.”
