Trump Shifts Stance on Ukraine War, Suggests Victory Possible
This week, former President Donald Trump surprised many by changing his position on the Ukraine conflict. He now believes that Ukraine can reclaim all the land it lost to Russia.
In a post on social media, Trump stated, “With the help of the European Union, Ukraine is capable of fighting for and winning back its territory.” He emphasized that with patience and financial backing from NATO, Ukraine could restore its original borders.
This represents a significant shift from his earlier views when he took office, where he seemed to suggest that Ukraine would need to make compromises in negotiations with Russia.
After a recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the UN General Assembly, both leaders expressed that their relationship has strengthened.
Experts like Yuriy Sak, a former defense advisor to Zelenskyy, noted that Trump’s new perspective may foster greater unity among Western allies in supporting Ukraine.
However, reactions to his change of heart are mixed among security specialists. Some see it as a hopeful sign, while others, like former CIA Moscow station chief Dan Hoffman, warn that words may not sway Russian President Vladimir Putin. Hoffman pointed out that during his time in the agency, he learned that Putin doesn’t respond to verbal threats.
Russia’s response to Trump’s comments was swift, with Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declaring that Trump’s views were mistaken. Despite no major advancements on the battlefield since early 2024, small military gains have been made this year, but the front lines remain largely unchanged.
Hoffman believes the U.S. needs to implement more decisive actions, including lifting restrictions on strikes in Ukraine, to ensure that Ukraine can defend itself effectively.
In contrast, Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovilė Šakalienė found Trump’s comments encouraging, emphasizing Ukraine’s right to regain its internationally recognized borders. She noted that strong support is essential for Ukraine to counter Russian threats, which could escalate tensions not just in Ukraine but across NATO countries.
Together, analysts and defense experts insist that the U.S.’s crucial role in this conflict must be fully realized. Sak remarked that the support of the U.S. is vital for maintaining a solid front against Russia’s actions.
Trump has also floated the idea that Ukraine might go beyond just regaining its lost territories, but Sak clarified that Ukraine is focused on expelling Russian forces from its land without ambitions to invade Russia itself.
Ultimately, Ukraine interprets Trump’s recent comments as a commitment to strengthen support for its fight against Russia, reinforcing ties with NATO and transatlantic partners. According to Sak, this unity could pose a significant challenge to Russia’s position in the ongoing conflict.
