Ricky Ponting Champions Travis Head’s Move to No. 3 Spot Before Ashes Battle

Ricky Ponting Recommends Travis Head for No. 3 Spot in Ashes Series

Former Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting has put forward a suggestion that Travis Head should be moved up to the No. 3 batting position for the upcoming Ashes series at home. He believes Head’s aggressive batting style could unsettle England’s pace bowlers right from the start.

As Australia aims to defend the Ashes trophy and continue their pursuit in the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27, Ponting feels that Head’s attacking approach could provide valuable early momentum for the team.

During a discussion on SEN Radio, Ponting emphasized that this change could also enhance the balance of the batting lineup. He reflected on how young players often start at the lower order and work their way up, hinting that Head could be the right candidate for the No. 3 position.

Ponting pointed out that having Head come in at No. 3 could apply immediate pressure on England’s fast bowlers. He stated, “The way England plays, having a player like Travis Head at No. 3 could really push Jofra Archer and Mark Wood to rethink their approach. It’s a smart tactic if Australia wants to take charge in this Ashes series.”

Paponting also acknowledged the growing talent in Australia’s squad, especially among younger players. He mentioned 19-year-old Sam Konstas, who recently scored a century for Australia A in India, suggesting he could join seasoned player Usman Khawaja at the top of the order.

“I can imagine our opening lineup featuring Konstas and Khawaja,” Ponting said. He also mentioned that with Cameron Green’s recent move to No. 3 during their tour of the Caribbean, it seems they view him as a long-term option for that spot. He envisions Steve Smith at No. 4, Head at No. 5, and thinks Beau Webster deserves a position at No. 6.

As the Ashes series approaches, Ponting’s insights reveal the selection challenges facing Australia as they strive to blend youthful talent with experienced players for a competitive edge.
