Report Highlights Hamas’ Influence Over UNRWA Schools
A recent report from UN Watch reveals significant concerns about how Hamas has taken control of the education system in Gaza and Lebanon under the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). The 220-page report, titled “Schools in the Grip of Terror,” outlines how Hamas has managed to influence UNRWA, particularly through its control of local staff unions, especially in teaching.
The report details alarming examples of Hamas’ involvement, including preventing UNRWA from making necessary changes to the curriculum, stopping actions against staff promoting antisemitism, and placing its members in key educational positions.
A spokesperson from the State Department expressed serious concerns, stating that UNRWA is “irreparably compromised” and advocating for its dismantlement. They emphasized the need for alternative organizations to step in to provide essential support, as the agency has been reportedly infiltrated by individuals affiliated with Hamas.
The report cites specific instances of Hamas’ interference, including the expulsion of Matthias Schmale, a former UNRWA official in Gaza, after he made comments perceived as pro-Israel. UN Watch claims it took less than ten days for Hamas-related union leaders to remove him from his position.
Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, criticized donor nations for funding UNRWA, believing they were supporting peace initiatives. Instead, he argues that these classrooms are turning into “incubators of hate.”
UNRWA has faced ongoing accusations of corruption and terrorism ties. Previous reports indicate involvement of UNRWA employees in violent attacks, raising further questions about accountability within the agency.
In response to the report, a UNRWA spokesperson dismissed the claims as part of a disinformation campaign and argued that most of the issues raised are already known and unsubstantiated. The U.S. government has ceased funding to UNRWA, citing its connection to Hamas.
The situation continues to be critical as the debate over UNRWA’s role and influence in the region unfolds.
