Asia Cup 2025: In-Form Bangladesh Seeks Victory Over Sri Lanka in Thrilling Naagin Derby

In July, Bangladesh made headlines in the cricket world by bouncing back from a 0-1 deficit to win their first-ever T20I series against Sri Lanka. This victory was a clear indicator that the Bangladeshi team, known as the Tigers, is ready to take on established cricketing nations. They are set to meet Sri Lanka once again, this time in the Asia Cup, on Saturday, September 13, at the famous Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

The match between these two teams is known for its intense rivalry. Fans have affectionately dubbed it the “Naagin Derby,” named after the memorable celebrations by players Nazmul Islam and Mushfiqur Rahim. It’s also referred to as the “Time-Out Derby,” after a dramatic moment between Shakib Al Hasan and Angelo Mathews during the 2023 World Cup. Each game has delivered thrilling moments that fans won’t forget.

Both teams see this upcoming match as crucial for their chances to advance to the Super Four stage of the tournament.

Will Bangladesh Maintain Their Momentum?

Bangladesh kicked off their Asia Cup 2025 journey confidently, clinching a seven-wicket win against Hong Kong. They chased down a target of 144 runs with 14 balls to spare, thanks to Litton Das’s solid performance of 59 runs and support from Towhid Hridoy, who remained not out at 35 runs. Although their Net Run Rate stands at +1.001, it still trails behind Afghanistan’s impressive +4.700.

If Bangladesh secures another win, they will be closer to qualifying for the Super Four. However, a loss could put their hopes at risk, especially if they tie on points with Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, making Net Run Rate a deciding factor.

Sri Lanka’s Chance for Victory

Sri Lanka is entering this match with a mix of young talent and seasoned players, looking to dominate on the field. Under the leadership of Charith Asalanka, they have aggressive openers like Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis. The middle order is strong too, featuring experienced players like Dasun Shanaka and Kusal Perera.

Their bowling lineup is noteworthy, with spinners like Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana, alongside fast bowlers such as Dushmantha Chameera and Matheesha Pathirana. With a well-rounded team and positive momentum, Sri Lanka is geared up to take on Bangladesh in what promises to be a thrilling match.

Pitch Conditions

The pitch at Abu Dhabi has shown to be slightly slower, providing good assistance to spinners. Scoring runs during the powerplay will be crucial, as it may become challenging to score as the match progresses.
