Protests Erupt Across France Amid Growing Discontent
French police took action on Wednesday, arresting hundreds of individuals during widespread protests named “Block Everything.” These demonstrations saw protesters shutting down roads, starting fires, and clashing with law enforcement.
In the early hours of the day, the French interior ministry reported 295 arrests as people across the country gathered to voice their opposition to President Emmanuel Macron’s policies, including significant budget cuts. The discontent grew following Prime Minister François Bayrou’s resignation after losing a parliamentary confidence vote, leading to his replacement by Sébastien Lecornu.
Student Baptiste Sagot expressed frustration, commenting, “One prime minister has just been ousted, and immediately we see another from the right. It feels like they want struggling people—workers, students, retirees—to bear the burden instead of addressing wealth inequality.”
In Paris, police used tear gas to disperse groups attempting to block the city’s beltway during the busy morning. Demonstrators set trash cans ablaze and threw objects at officers, with firefighters rushing to a downtown area where a fire erupted in a restaurant.
By mid-afternoon, police reported that 183 people had been arrested in Paris alone, with additional arrests throughout the nation. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau noted that protesters in Rennes had even set a bus on fire.
Traffic disruptions and protests were widespread, affecting cities from Marseille in the south to Lille in the north, and from Nantes to Grenoble.
The “Block Everything” movement gained traction over the summer, fueled by social media and encrypted communication. It called for a day of strikes and demonstrations as the government prepared to enforce budget cuts totaling $51 billion to address France’s mounting deficit.
Macron had appointed Bayrou in December, following a series of resignations that led to multiple prime ministerial changes within a year. Reports indicate that by early 2025, France’s public debt was approximately 114% of its GDP.
Around 80,000 police officers were deployed throughout the country to manage the situation on this critical day of protests.
