Trump Discusses U.S.-India Relationship, Highlights Tariff Issues

On September 2, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump spoke at the White House about the relationship between the United States and India. He expressed that while the two countries generally get along well, there have been significant issues regarding trade tariffs.

Trump remarked, “No, we get along with India very well,” in response to a question about possibly reducing tariffs on Indian goods. He noted that in the past, the relationship had been quite “one-sided,” primarily because India was imposing high tariffs on American products.

He added that these tariffs were some of the highest in the world, which hindered trade between the two nations. “India was charging us tremendous tariffs, which meant we weren’t doing much business with them,” he explained. In contrast, he pointed out that the U.S. had not imposed similar tariffs on Indian products, allowing Indian goods to flood the American market.

Trump used Harley Davidson as an example of this imbalance. He mentioned the motorcycle brand struggled to sell its products in India due to a 200% tariff. To circumvent this barrier, Harley Davidson decided to set up a manufacturing plant in India, allowing them to avoid these hefty tariffs altogether.

The President’s comments reflect ongoing discussions about trade policy and economic relations between the U.S. and India, highlighting a need for balance in future negotiations.
