Landslide in Sudan’s Central Darfur Claims Over 1,000 Lives
A tragic landslide in Tarasin Village, located in Central Darfur, Sudan, resulted in the loss of at least 1,000 lives, as reported by a local rebel group on Sunday, August 31. The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM-A) indicated that the disaster was caused by heavy rains that hit the area for several days leading up to the event, leaving the village completely destroyed.
According to the SLM-A’s statement, initial reports suggest that nearly all the residents of the village perished, with only one person surviving the disaster. The full extent of the disaster is still being assessed, but if confirmed, this could be one of the deadliest natural disasters in the region in recent years.
The situation is complicated by restricted access to the area, hindering independent verification of the reported figures. Local authorities describe the event as a “humanitarian tragedy,” and there are urgent calls for assistance from the United Nations and international aid organizations to help in the recovery and relief efforts.
Darfur’s governor, Minni Minnawi, emphasized the dire state of affairs in the region, highlighting the need for immediate support to aid the affected families.
As part of the ongoing challenges, many residents from North Darfur had already sought refuge in nearby areas due to ongoing conflicts and violence by paramilitary groups.
