Neeraj Chopra Prepares for Diamond League Final
Indian Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra appeared serene and focused while speaking to the media ahead of the Diamond League Final in Zurich, Switzerland. Sharing the stage with Olympic discus champion Valarie Allman, Neeraj discussed his new ambitions after surpassing the 90-meter mark, his experiences with coach Jan Zelezny, and the competition he anticipates.
The reigning world champion will face a talented group of competitors, including world leader Julian Weber, former champion Anderson Peters, and Olympic medallists Julius Yego and Keshorn Walcott. Notably, Olympic gold medallist Arshad Nadeem will not participate, having skipped the Diamond League events this season.
Neeraj expressed relief now that the questions surrounding the 90-meter mark have diminished. Earlier this year, he threw 90.23 meters in Doha, surpassing his previous personal best of 89.94 meters. Despite this achievement, he finished second to Julian Weber, who had a throw of 91.06 meters.
Aiming for Consistency
Neeraj shared that his desire for more is far from over, as he aims for consistent throws exceeding 90 meters. He has established himself as a reliable competitor over the past two Olympic cycles, regularly throwing beyond 85 meters and often exceeding 88 meters. He has also stood on the podium more than 25 times.
“I waited a long time for the 90-meter throw, and it feels great that people have stopped asking about it. Since I threw 88 meters in 2018, it was always on my mind. Now, it’s behind me,” Neeraj, who claimed the Diamond Trophy in 2022, stated.
Focused on Technique
At 26, Neeraj appears confident about his potential for improvement. His training with the legendary three-time Olympic champion Jan Zelezny has centered on refining his technique. He highlighted the small adjustments he’s been focusing on since starting with Zelezny late last season.
“I want to throw consistently over 90 meters. My early-season focus has been on perfecting my technique. In training, I’m doing well with Coach Jan. I aim to carry this technique into competition,” he explained.
Neeraj stressed the importance of optimizing his left-leg position during throws and maximizing his speed. “I’m quick in my run-up, but I believe I can use my speed more effectively. In Doha, the throw was good, but I wouldn’t say my technique was flawless. Straightening my left leg at release could lead to better throws,” he added.
Handling Weather Challenges
With rain expected in Zurich, Neeraj acknowledged that the weather may not favor big throws. “I enjoy throwing in different conditions. While the forecast predicts rain, it’s the same for everyone. Staying mentally focused is key,” he said, noting that adjusting to various weather conditions is crucial for a javelin thrower.
Learning from a Champion
Neeraj has learned valuable lessons about handling pressure from Zelezny, someone he greatly admires. He started working with Zelezny after his longtime coach retired last year.
“Jan has taught me how to remain calm under pressure. He consistently threw over 90 meters, which inspires me to learn from him. He often reminds me that technique is my strongest asset. I’m striving to improve my technique under his guidance,” Neeraj shared.
Prime Rivals on the Field
Having earned Olympic silver last year, Neeraj feels the weight of expectations. His rival, Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, set a record with a throw of 92.97 meters during the Games, denying Neeraj the gold. On the Diamond League circuit, Julian Weber has proven to be a tough competitor, along with previous rival Jakub Vadlejch.
Neeraj remarked, “My main rival right now appears to be Julian Weber. He’s performing excellently, having thrown 91 meters in Doha and 89 meters in Brussels. Competing against him is exciting, especially since we’re friends.”
After participating in the Neeraj Chopra Classic in Bengaluru in July, he enters the Zurich competition refreshed, having skipped earlier Diamond League meets to conserve energy for this finale and the upcoming World Championships in Tokyo.
