Injury Strikes Key Players Santner and Phillips as New Zealand Prepares for a Packed Home Season

New Zealand Faces Injury Struggles Ahead of Busy Home Season

New Zealand is grappling with a significant injury crisis just as they prepare for a packed home season. Key players, including Mitchell Santner, Glenn Phillips, Will O’Rourke, and Finn Allen, are dealing with various injuries. The Blackcaps are set to host Australia, England, and the West Indies for several series starting October 1. They’ll also play a T20I series against South Africa in March 2026.

Unfortunately, many of their top players might miss the upcoming matches. Fast bowler Will O’Rourke has been sidelined for three months due to a stress fracture in his lower back, as revealed by New Zealand Cricket.

The 24-year-old O’Rourke sustained the injury during the first Test against Zimbabwe earlier this month. He has now returned home for treatment. In addition to O’Rourke, all-rounder Glenn Phillips is facing a groin injury, and opening batter Finn Allen is recovering from foot surgery. Both players will miss the three-match T20I series against Australia for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy starting October 1.

Allen could be out for about three months, while Phillips will be assessed in a month to determine his possible return. To complicate matters further, limited-overs captain Mitchell Santner, who just played in The Hundred for Northern Superchargers, is also struggling with groin pain.

Santner is scheduled for abdominal surgery and will need around a month to recover, putting his availability for the Australia series in doubt. Amid these challenges, there’s some good news; fast bowler Ben Sears has recovered from a side strain and is expected to participate in the upcoming home season.

New Zealand head coach Rob Walter stated that they plan to include Santner in the squad for the Australia series, with a wait-and-see approach regarding his recovery.

“We expect to name him in our squad in the coming weeks and will evaluate his rehabilitation before making a final decision right before the series starts,” Walter said.

Following the T20Is against Australia, New Zealand will face England in three T20Is and ODIs beginning October 18. They will then play five T20Is, three ODIs, and as many Tests against the West Indies, starting November 5. This series will also kick off New Zealand’s campaign in the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle for 2025-27.
