11-Year-Old Ohio Girl Receives Heart Transplant After Over 200 Days of Waiting

In a touching moment, an 11-year-old girl from Ohio named Ava Cooper delivered the life-changing news to her dad that she was finally getting a heart transplant. Ava, who was born in 2014 with serious heart defects, had her first open-heart surgery when she was just six days old.

Despite her early treatments, Ava’s health declined dramatically in May 2024 when a sinus infection led to heart failure. Medical professionals determined that a heart transplant was her best chance for survival.

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, heart transplants are essential for children with serious heart conditions, as they cannot survive without a new heart.

Ava spent more than 200 days at the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital, where her family anxiously awaited news about a donor heart. That good news arrived in March 2025 when her mother, Jamie, received a call about a suitable donor. She quickly conveyed the information to Ava’s father, Sean, who was at home with their younger daughter.

When Sean answered the phone, he was greeted with the joyful voice of his daughter saying, “Daddy, I’m getting a heart.” His emotional response was filled with disbelief and joy as he realized this was a major step towards her recovery.

The surgery took place later that month under the skilled hands of pediatric heart surgeon Dr. Hani Najm. Ava expressed her excitement, saying it was hard to believe that this was truly happening.

After spending eight long months in the hospital, Ava was finally strong enough to return home, marking a significant milestone in her journey to recovery. For her dad, this phone call remains an unforgettable moment, symbolizing hope and a step closer to a normal life for their family.

“After everything she had been through, we were finally one step closer to coming home for good,” Sean said, reflecting on the incredible journey they have had.

This heartwarming story showcases the resilience of a young girl and the unwavering support of her family as they faced tough times together.
