Pope Leo XIV Welcomes Four Close Friends to Papal Apartment at the Vatican

Pope Leo XIV Moves into New Papal Apartment with Roommates

Pope Leo XIV is making waves at the Vatican by moving into a revamped papal apartment, where he plans to live with four roommates. This marks a significant departure from tradition, as it is the first time in modern history that a pope has chosen communal living in the official residence, according to reports.

The pope’s new home, which is currently being updated, is part of an effort to foster a sense of community. Vatican correspondent Iacopo Scaramuzzi commented that while this decision may seem new, it reflects a modern approach to the papacy. Among those expected to join Leo is his personal secretary, Father Edgard Rimaycuna, a loyal friend since the pope’s early days in South America.

This move highlights a contrast to Pope Francis, who opted against moving into the papal apartments when he became pope in 2013, instead residing in a guesthouse. Scaramizzi noted that while Leo is different from Francis, he still embodies a humble spirit, choosing to live with others rather than in isolation.

The Apostolic Palace, where the apartment is located, is steeped in history, dating back to the 15th century. It houses not only the papal apartments but also offices, museums, and the famous Sistine Chapel. Reports indicate that renovations are presently underway for the 10-room suite, which has faced issues like water damage after being unused for several years.

After the passing of Pope Francis in April, the apartments underwent a ritual sealing, only to be reopened later for refurbishment. Until his new home is ready, Pope Leo has been staying in a nearby building close to St. Peter’s Basilica.

Born into a working-class family in Chicago, Pope Leo XIV wants to maintain a simple lifestyle. He stated, “A bishop is not meant to be a little prince in his kingdom but should remain humble and close to the people he serves.”

Reactions to his decision to live with roommates have been mixed, with some expressing support and others raising questions about this new chapter in papal living. Author James Martin shared his support on social media, encouraging trust in the pope’s judgment.

As Pope Leo XIV settles into his fresh surroundings, the Vatican community looks forward to how this change will shape his leadership.
