NATO Chief of Defense Reiterates Support for Ukraine in Virtual Meeting
In a recent virtual meeting held in Brussels, NATO’s Chiefs of Defense reaffirmed their strong support for Ukraine amidst ongoing discussions about security guarantees. This gathering, which involved all 32 allied military leaders, featured a briefing by U.S. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, the new Supreme Allied Commander Europe.
U.S. officials confirmed that Gen. Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, participated in the meeting alongside Grynkewich. During the discussions, NATO emphasized the importance of security assurances for Ukraine as part of any potential peace deal aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Col. Martin O’Donnell, who speaks for NATO’s military leadership, shared that the Commander was honored to address the Chiefs of Defense in this format, highlighting the critical nature of the current events.
The meeting’s discussions were described as open and productive, with NATO military leaders expressing their unity and commitment to supporting Ukraine. They stressed the goal of achieving a “just and lasting peace” in the region, noting the bravery of Ukrainian forces.

The backdrop of this meeting included former President Donald Trump’s efforts to facilitate dialogue between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Trump met with both leaders in recent days, aiming to push for a settlement.
Additionally, Caine had convened a meeting with defense chiefs from Germany, the U.K., France, Finland, and Italy just prior, to prepare for the broader NATO discussions.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov responded critically to NATO’s security discussions concerning Ukraine, asserting that they were being held without Russia’s input, and claimed that Russia would act firmly to protect its interests.
