Jacob Bethell Set to Make History as Youngest England Captain
England all-rounder Jacob Bethell is gearing up to take on the exciting role of captain ahead of his debut against Ireland. At just 21 years and 329 days old, Bethell is poised to become the youngest captain in England’s cricket history. This milestone comes as he leads the team for the three T20 International matches starting on September 17.
With Harry Brook resting for the series, Bethell steps into the leadership role, breaking the previous record held by Monty Parker Bowden, who captained the team at the age of 23 during a Test match in 1888-89.
Speaking before his first match in charge, Bethell expressed his desire to lead by example, taking inspiration from Test captain Ben Stokes. “One big thing I’ve observed about Stokes is that he leads through his actions. He’s often the one who steps up and tackles challenges head-on. I’ll aim to do the same with my bat, ball, and in the field,” Bethell shared with Sky Sports.
Bethell is also eager to replicate the team’s earlier success, hoping to recreate their impressive 6-0 series win against the West Indies earlier this year. “Finding out I’d be captain was an overwhelming feeling of pride. It’s a huge honor to lead England, and I’m excited for the challenge. We had a fantastic series against the West Indies earlier this summer,” he added.
So far, Bethell has participated in 13 T20 matches, scoring 281 runs with an average of 40.14 and taking four wickets. He has also played two matches in the Indian Premier League for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
