Arab Nations React Strongly to Netanyahu’s ‘Greater Israel’ Comments

CAIRO: Arab nations have expressed strong disapproval of comments made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that suggest support for an expanded “Greater Israel.” They see these remarks as a direct threat to their sovereignty, especially during a notably tense time in the region.

The term “Greater Israel” refers to a historical and biblical view of the territory originally claimed during the reign of King Solomon. This concept includes not only the current Palestinian lands in Gaza and the West Bank but also parts of modern-day Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.

On Tuesday, in an interview with i24NEWS, when asked if he supports the idea of a Greater Israel, Netanyahu replied, “absolutely,” indicating that he believes in this vision. He then spoke about the founding of Israel, emphasizing its vital mission to ensure its survival.

Following Netanyahu’s comments, Jordan condemned his remarks as a “dangerous and provocative escalation” that threatens the sovereignty of neighboring states. A spokesperson for Jordan’s foreign ministry criticized Netanyahu’s statements as “inflammatory” and urged a focus on peace.

Egypt also sought clarification on Netanyahu’s comments, suggesting they indicate a dismissal of potential peace options in the region. Amid an ongoing 22-month conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, these remarks have drawn condemnation from across the Arab world.

Iraq joined in the criticism, stating that Netanyahu’s words highlighted Israel’s “expansionist ambitions” and served as a provocation to other nations. Qatar, which mediates in the Gaza situation, labeled the comments as “absurd” and “inflammatory.”

Netanyahu’s reference to an expanded Israel comes as far-right members of his cabinet push for the conquest of Gaza and the annexation of the West Bank, where the Israeli government has recently approved new settlements deemed illegal under international law.

Saudi Arabia voiced its “total rejection” of Israel’s colonization plans, reaffirming the Palestinian people’s historical and legal right to establish their own state.

In a previous interview, Netanyahu stirred controversy by suggesting that a Palestinian state could be established on Saudi land. Recently, he also reiterated a controversial proposal allowing Palestinians to leave Gaza, which many fear could lead to their displacement, echoing sentiments from past discussions involving other leaders like former President Donald Trump.
