Opposition Dinner to Address Electoral Concerns
New Delhi: In a bold move to confront alleged electoral misconduct, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge is set to hold a dinner for MPs from the INDIA coalition this Monday. This gathering is part of a wider effort by opposition parties to challenge the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, which they claim could lead to significant voter disenfranchisement.
The dinner, taking place at the Hotel Taj Palace in Chanakyapuri, will coincide with a protest march by opposition MPs directed towards the Election Commission’s office, focusing on what they term “poll fraud.” This comes on the heels of a recent display of unity, where key leaders from the INDIA bloc convened at Rahul Gandhi’s residence last week to discuss strategies against the electoral roll revision and what they call the “vote chori model” supposedly endorsed by the ruling BJP and the Election Commission.
Leaders from 25 parties attended the meeting, including notable figures like Sonia Gandhi, NCP-SP head Sharad Pawar, and TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee. During the gathering, Rahul Gandhi presented a comprehensive view of the alleged electoral manipulations, suggesting a coordinated effort between the BJP and the Election Commission to compromise election integrity.
The Congress party later emphasized their commitment to safeguarding democracy on social media, stating, “A united front against electoral manipulation! We are dedicated to preserving democracy at all costs.”
Earlier, in a press briefing, Gandhi reiterated his claims of significant electoral fraud, asserting a troubling alliance between the BJP and the Election Commission. Gaurav Gogoi, Congress’ deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, noted the remarkable unity displayed among opposition parties in both the Parliament and their recent meetings as they seek to pressure the government.
The opposition remains sharply opposed to the SIR initiative in Bihar, voicing concerns that it may risk disenfranchising numerous voters.
