The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has temporarily suspended batter Haider Ali after it was revealed that he is involved in a criminal investigation by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) in the UK. This decision, announced by the PCB, will remain in effect while the investigation is ongoing.
Details about the specific allegations against the 24-year-old have not been shared publicly. However, reports indicate that Haider was questioned by GMP, although he is not in custody.
The situation under scrutiny is believed to have taken place during the recent tour of England by the Pakistan Shaheens, which wrapped up earlier this week. Haider played a key role during the tour, participating in all three 50-over matches against a first-class squad and both three-day matches.
In their statement, the PCB acknowledged being informed about the ongoing investigation and underscored its commitment to follow legal protocols in the UK. “The PCB has been made aware of a criminal investigation involving cricketer Haider Ali related to an incident during the Pakistan Shaheens’ recent tour of England,” the board stated. They emphasized the importance of allowing the investigation to proceed without interference, thus leading to Haider’s provisional suspension, effective immediately.
The PCB also mentioned that Haider is receiving legal support to ensure his rights are protected throughout the process. Once the legal matters are resolved and all details are clarified, the PCB may take additional actions under its Code of Conduct if deemed necessary.
Haider Ali, who debuted internationally in 2020, has played in two One-Day Internationals and 35 T20 Internationals for Pakistan. Despite a bright start to his career, he has faced challenges with form and consistency in recent years.
The PCB has reiterated the importance of due process and has stated that no further comments will be made until the investigation is complete.
