Sourav Ganguly Set to Run for President of Cricket Association of Bengal

Former Indian cricket captain and the past head of the BCCI, Sourav Ganguly, is gearing up to run for the President’s position of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). He recently confirmed his plans to submit his nomination ahead of the Annual General Meeting (AGM).

If Ganguly decides to enter the contest, he is likely to be elected without opposition. His return to lead CAB comes after his brother, Snehasish Ganguly, is no longer eligible to serve as president due to the tenure restrictions set by the Lodha Committee.

The CAB has announced the timeline for its AGM and elections. An emergency meeting of the apex council took place on Tuesday to coordinate the upcoming election plans. The final apex council meeting is set for August 14, 2025, with the AGM scheduled for September 20, 2025.

Ganguly previously held the role of CAB Secretary in 2015, later taking over as President that same year after Jagmohan Dalmiya. He led the CAB until 2019, when he transitioned to the role of BCCI President from 2019 to 2022.

Sourav Ganguly’s Impact on Indian Cricket

Ganguly has been a key figure in shaping Indian cricket, first as CAB President and then as head of the BCCI. During his time with the CAB from 2015 to 2019, he worked tirelessly to enhance Bengal cricket by modernizing facilities and boosting player development programs.

He focused on professional coaching and upgrading training facilities, which helped Bengal’s performance in competitions like the Ranji Trophy. As BCCI President, he initiated various projects aimed at strengthening the foundation of Indian cricket and increasing its global presence.

One of his significant achievements was the establishment of a modern National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, providing top-notch training for young cricketers. He also made notable advancements in women’s cricket by introducing the Women’s T20 Challenge, allowing female players to showcase their skills on a bigger platform.

Under Ganguly’s leadership, the BCCI secured record media rights deals for the Indian Premier League (IPL), bringing in revenues of over Rs 48,000 crore for the 2023-2027 cycle.

In 2022, Roger Binny, a World Cup champion from 1983, took over as the BCCI president after Ganguly.
