Yuzvendra Chahal Opens Up About Personal Struggles and Divorce
Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal recently shared his feelings on the end of his marriage with Dhanashree Verma. The couple, who were married for nearly five years, finalized their divorce on March 20, as ruled by the Bombay High Court. In a candid conversation on the Raj Shamani podcast, Chahal revealed that he faced severe mental health challenges during the last months of their relationship.
Chahal described experiencing anxiety attacks and admitted that he even had suicidal thoughts. He mentioned that he took a break from his state cricket team during the Vijay Hazare Trophy in late 2024, citing the stress he was under. “I felt overwhelmed, I was sweating even in air conditioning. I knew I needed a break,” he shared.
He explained that their marriage broke down primarily because they were not aligned in their expectations. With both of them pursuing demanding careers, Chahal found it difficult to spend quality time with his wife. “A relationship requires compromise,” he noted. “When one person gets upset, the other should listen. Sometimes two ambitious people can drift apart.”
Chahal highlighted that balancing his sports career with personal life was challenging. “As a player for India, my focus was on cricket. I was unable to dedicate enough time to our relationship,” he reflected.
When discussing his own flaws, Chahal admitted that he struggled to express his emotions. He recognized this as a barrier in their relationship but mentioned that he is actively working to improve himself. “I’ve learned that when I’m sad, I shouldn’t expect my partner to feel the same way,” he stated.
Following their split, some social media users criticized Chahal for appearing cheerful, especially after a recent incident where he wore a shirt that seemed to mock his past. He responded to the backlash by asserting, “I have the right to be happy. I went through a challenging time for months, and it’s important to celebrate moving forward.”
Chahal emphasized that despite the difficulties, he remains focused on building a positive future for himself.
