Apple’s AI Journey: Progress with Privacy

Last Updated: July 24, 2025, 11:27 IST

Apple’s venture into artificial intelligence has been gradual, leading to a delay in the release of its updated Siri AI, now expected in 2026. The company places a strong emphasis on user privacy, which hampers its ability to collect the data needed to fully train its AI models. This has prompted Apple to seek assistance from competitors to enhance its AI features.

Recently, Apple released a comprehensive report detailing how its AI models are designed and trained without relying heavily on user data. The company has developed its own AI servers to manage the processing necessary for its AI tasks, ensuring that user privacy remains a priority.

Training Apple’s AI Models

Apple has created two distinct AI models: one optimized for on-device processing and another for more complex tasks that run on Apple’s private computing system. These models are responsible for various functions such as interpreting text, understanding images, and even generating content—all while prioritizing user privacy.

To train these models, Apple uses synthetic data that does not contain any real user information. Instead, it relies on internal models that use metrics from devices enrolled in Apple’s analytics program. However, this lack of real-world data limits the AI’s understanding, which might explain some of the difficulties that Siri faces in accurately interpreting user commands.

Enhancing On-Device AI Capabilities

Apple’s technology enables it to offer many AI features locally, reducing the need for cloud computing resources. This approach is crucial because external services like OpenAI or Google do not allow Apple to oversee how user data is processed.

Apple’s commitment to privacy is evident throughout its systems and data usage, impacting how it can analyze information compared to competitors like OpenAI and Google, who may utilize different methods to gather their extensive datasets.

Apple also skipped promoting its AI advancements during the recent WWDC 2025 event, and there’s a possibility that the upcoming iPhone 17 series might not include an AI introduction either. The company is expected to have a substantial year in 2026 if it hopes to keep pace with its rivals in the AI space.
